Danny happy with productive Jerez test
After two private outings at the Circuito de Jerez in February, the German Kiefer Racing Moto2™ outfit headed backed by a good base and with confidence into the first of two official IRTA tests last week in southern Spain. However, nice weather but with hot temperatures, particularly during the afternoon sessions, initially caused some confusion for the squad.
Kiefer Racing has been working meticulously during the winter month for season preparations since they made the move to rolling chassis of the Swiss manufacturer Suter Industries.
The good weather conditions allowed Danny Kent and teammate Dominique Aegerter to do many laps and to try and test as many as possible different things to their bike. But first, both struggled a bit due to ground temperatures with more than 45 degrees. Values like these are also very unusual for this season even for the southern part of Spain. So, this meant, that it took a while to find a suitable setting for the all-new Suter Moto2 machine.
But both riders were soon able to set a consistent pace under this treacherous conditions though this fact was already shown as strengthens of whole package during the team’s private testing’s last month. But during Friday morning’s session, obviously in still cooler conditions, the new season saw somewhat of a qualifying session for the first time. Danny posted the twelfth fastest lap time of the entire highly competitive Moto2 category.
The second IRTA Test which marks for teams and riders the final opportunity for their season preparations will take place this weekend in Qatar with just one week ahead of the championships opening round with the meanwhile traditional and spectacular night race at the enormous Losail International Circuit close to the Persian Gulf.
#52 Danny KENT, P12 – 1´42.760 (179 Laps in total):
“Overall, this test went very well for us. We already had three productive days of testing in Jerez last month but the track temperatures were much cooler at that time. Nevertheless, we were able to increase our feeling with the bike as well as to create a good base overall. But during the IRTA test, the conditions were that much hot we never saw at this early stage of the year in Jerez. First, this caused us a little headache because we had to change the setting of the bike and adjust it to the conditions. But this is normal when the situation changes significantly.
On the other hand, we must inevitably admit that we were lucky with this beautiful weather because, first, for the Grand Prix here in Jerez in two month it meant that there is no more so many things to do to set up the bike. This also applies to the races in summer and in general under hot conditions. And secondly, we were able to take great advantage of this test although, frankly we still have some work ahead of us, particularly for race in the heat. In contrast, our pace is very fast and consistent under normal circumstances.
But now, I am looking forward to our next test in Qatar to race on a different track. Apart from that, I always have liked the circuit there – I like it a lot if there are many long and fast flowing corners. In addition, I think, it’s also time to race and test our new material somewhere else. The Losail Circuit is very different to Valencia and Jerez, where we did so many laps during the winter month.”
